The New Hampshire state flag is a blue flag with the New Hampshire State seal in the center surrounded by laurel leaves forming a wreath with 9 stars interspersed. The state seal depicts the frigate USS Raleigh in the harbor of Portsmouth, one of the first 13 war ships sponsored by the Continental Congress in 1776.  Behind the ship is a rising sun showing Portsmouth becoming a major shipbuilding center. There is a yellow strip of land representing New Hampshire’s rugged landscape and the sturdy character of her people.

The laurel wreath is the ancient symbol of honor, fame, and victory, with the 9 stars reflecting New Hampshire as the 9th state to join the Union.
